OVERVIEW

This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide services to clients in relation to mental health issues. They can provide counselling, referral, advocacy and education/health promotion services. These workers are required to have high level specialist knowledge, skills and competencies especially in regard to laws affecting people with mental health issues, the range of services available to them and health issues related to mental health. 

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 160 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

To be awarded the CHC53315 Certificate IV in Mental Health, a student must successfully complete a total of twenty (20) units of competency, comprising of:

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Whilst there are no entry requirements specified in the training package, the RTO requires prospective learners to meet the following course entry criteria:

  • Applicants must be minimum 18 years of age at the time of commencement
  • Applicants must demonstrate that they have attained at least ACSF level 3 by successful completion of Australian Year 12 qualification, or equivalent
  • Have obtained an IELTS overall score of at least 6.0 – or equivalent; or 5.5 where the test score is combined with at least 10 weeks ELICOS or 5.0 where the test score is combined with at least 20 weeks ELICOS; or,

    Reference – (Subclass 500 Student visa (homeaffairs.gov.au)

  • Have completed a Certificate III, IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma level Qualification in Australia; or,
  • Have completed Certificate III or Certificate IV in ESL or EAL from the ESL/EAL or,
  • Have completed the ELICOS Course: General English – Intermediate Level.

Alternatively, students may demonstrate the required ACSF and LLN levels by undertaking Howland Academy of Australia’s ASCF LLN
assessments.

Students who have completed the CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health will have met the course entry requirements, as long as they are at least 18 years old at time of enrolment.

In addition, Howland Academy of Australia requires that the learners:

  • have a Children Check and/or Police Check (In Australia) prior to the work placement if request by the host employer(s);
  • must be able to work with various types of clients such as different age group from 18 years and above, different religious believes, different nationalities.
  • should have basic computer skills including using MS Office software or other spreadsheet, and word processing software;
  • and,
  • have a personal computer, laptop, tablet or any device, with access to MS Office application packages (At least MS Excel, MS Word and MS Power Point).

Work placement is a requirement for this course. students will be offered the opportunity to undertake one or more placements in industry during their course. A placement will enable students to apply their knowledge and skills in a real work setting. 

Howland Academy of Australia requires that the learners to have Children Check and/or Police Check (In Australia) prior to the work placement (if requested by the Host Employers).

PATHWAYS FROM THE QUALIFICATION 

After achieving CHC53315 Diploma of Mental Health, graduates could progress to the CHC62015 Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management.
