OVERVIEW

This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide self-directed recovery-oriented support for people affected by mental illness and psychiatric disability. Work involves implementing community-based programs and activities focusing on mental health, mental illness, and psychiatric disability. Work is undertaken in a range of community contexts such as community based non-government organisations; home based outreach; centre-based programs; respite care; residential services, rehabilitation programs; clinical settings; or supporting people in employment. Work is carried out autonomously under the broad guidance of other practitioners and professionals. 

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 80 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

To be awarded the CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health, a student must successfully complete a total of fifteen (15) units of competency, comprising of: 

eleven (11) core units, and; 

four (4) elective units

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Whilst there are no entry requirements specified in the training package, the RTO requires prospective learners to meet the following course entry criteria:

  • Applicants must be minimum 18 years of age at the time of commencement
  • Applicants must demonstrate that they have attained at least ACSF level 3 by successful completion of Australian Year 12 qualification, or equivalent
  • Have obtained an IELTS overall score of at least 6.0 – or equivalent; or 5.5 where the test score is combined with at least 10 weeks ELICOS or 5.0 where the test score is combined with at least 20 weeks ELICOS; or,

    Reference – (Subclass 500 Student visa (homeaffairs.gov.au)

  • Have completed a Certificate III, IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma level Qualification in Australia; or,
  • Have completed Certificate III or Certificate IV in ESL or EAL from the ESL/EAL or,
  • Have completed the ELICOS Course: General English – Intermediate Level.

Alternatively, students may demonstrate the required ACSF and LLN levels by undertaking Howland Academy of Australia’s ASCF LLN
assessments.

In addition, Howland Academy of Australia requires that the learners:

  • have a Children Check and/or Police Check (In Australia) prior to the work placement if request by the host employer(s);
  • must be able to work with various types of clients such as different age group from 18 years and above, different religious believes, different nationalities.
  • should have basic computer skills including using MS Office software or other spreadsheet, and word processing software;
    and,
  • have a personal computer, laptop, tablet or any device, with access to MS Office application packages (At least MS Excel, MS Word and MS Power Point

Work placement is a requirement for this course. Students will be offered the opportunity to undertake one or more placements in industry during their course. A placement will enable students to apply their knowledge and skills in a real work setting. Student will develop skills and competencies related to the below units: 

  • CHCMHS002, Establish self-directed recovery relationships 
  • CHCMHS003, Provide recovery oriented mental health services 
  • CHCMHS004, Work collaboratively with the care network and other services 

Howland Academy of Australia requires the learners to have Children Check and/or Police Check (In Australia) prior to the work placement (if requested by the Host Employers).  
 

 

WORK PLACEMENT

PATHWAYS FROM THE QUALIFICATION 

After achieving CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health, graduates could progress to the CHC53315 Diploma of Mental Health or higher from within the Community Services training package
